Thief jailed after £1,500 Cambridge shoplifting spree

Cambridge stores hit in two-week theft spree as serial offender targets Decathlon, Tesco and John Lewis before arrest

A thief who stole goods worth more than £1,500 from shops across Cambridge has been jailed for 28 weeks.

Sean Smith, 26, of no fixed address, appeared at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (7 October) where he admitted seven counts of theft, three counts of burglary, bike theft and common assault.

Between 23 September and his arrest on 6 October, Smith stole items including alcohol, perfume, scratch cards and electric toothbrushes from stores including Decathlon, B&Q, Tesco, Superdrug and John Lewis.

Police said Smith also broke the lock of a bike secured on Burleigh Street before stealing it and assaulting the owner.

PC Bradleigh Bucknell, from the Southern Spree Offender Team, said: “Persistent theft and brazen disregard for the law has consequences. We hope this sentence sends a clear message that repeat offending will not be tolerated in Cambridge.”

Smith was arrested following the series of thefts and taken into custody ahead of his court appearance this week.
