Storm Benjamin will bring winds of up to 70mph to southern and eastern England on Thursday, prompting a yellow weather warning from the Met Office.
The warning runs from 9am to 11:59pm on Thursday 23 October, covering parts of Kent and Sussex initially before moving across the southeast. Wind gusts of 40-45mph are expected across Kent and Sussex from early morning, reaching 55mph in coastal areas.
As the storm moves northeast, stronger winds will develop with gusts of 50-60mph probable across wide areas. Coastal regions could see gusts of 65-70mph, with a smaller chance of winds exceeding 70mph locally during late morning and afternoon.
The Met Office warns of potential travel disruption to road, rail, air and ferry services. There is a slight chance of damage to buildings, including tiles blown from roofs, and possible power cuts affecting mobile phone coverage.
Coastal areas face additional risks from large waves and beach material being thrown onto seafronts, coastal roads and properties. Flying debris could cause injuries. The weather service advises people to secure loose items including bins, garden furniture and trampolines.
Travellers should check road conditions and transport timetables before journeys.
Considerable uncertainty remains over Storm Benjamin’s precise track and intensity, which will significantly impact local conditions. Near the storm’s centre, winds may lull temporarily before increasing sharply as it moves away. The warning carries a very low likelihood but medium impact rating.
