Residents are being invited to help co-design changes to the look of Mill Road, one of Cambridge’s main roads.
Cambridgeshire County Council has asked design practice 5th Studio to run local events and gather feedback to see whether people want improvements to the street. Possible changes could include more seating, crossings, parking, trees and planters, changes to lighting, or more provision for shop deliveries, the council said.
“If there is an appetite for change, we want to know how much and what kind,” said Alex Beckett, Liberal Democrat chairman of the council’s highways and transport committee. “Mill Road is loved by all of us and, if we come together now, we have a real chance to create something amazing for the whole community.”
The council said it had funding available for early works on the road, including £11,000 for new planters and money for partial road resurfacing. It said the funds could support quick projects arising from the drop-in sessions, with larger-scale works subject to further consultation and, if wanted, to additional funding being secured by local authorities.
Informal community drop-in sessions will be held on 30 June (12:00–15:00) and 16 July (16:30–19:30) at St Philip’s Church; 4 July (10:30–17:00) at The Old School Hall, St Barnabas Centre; and 22 July (16:30–19:30) at Mill Road Community Centre. 5th Studio is also due to run stakeholder and walking workshops with local business and community groups.
