Council launches drive to find tradespeople for life-changing adaptations while boosting city’s economy.
Local builders are being offered the chance to win contracts that could transform the lives of disabled people across Peterborough.
The city council is hosting a special event next week to recruit construction firms for a scheme that will adapt homes to help residents remain independent.
The procurement event takes place on 17 October at Sand Martin House in Fletton Quays, running from 10am to 12.30pm.
The scheme covers work that can be life-changing for families – from installing wet rooms and ramps to widening doorways and reconfiguring entire homes.
Council bosses said they want to keep the money local, using government grants to support Peterborough businesses and create jobs in the city.
Small and medium-sized firms are particularly encouraged to attend, whether they book ahead by calling 01733 863895 or simply drop in on the day.
The council needs builders who can meet safeguarding standards, including DBS checks, and demonstrate solid construction experience.
Staff will be on hand throughout the event to answer questions, with networking time built in at the end.
Later in October, formal tender documents will be published for all interested companies to bid.
The adaptations transform daily life for people who struggle with standard homes – making showers accessible, creating ground-floor bedrooms, or simply allowing wheelchair users to move freely through doorways.
Every adaptation is carefully assessed. Households must pass a means test and receive an occupational therapist’s evaluation proving the changes are needed.
Government grants cover the work, with additional council funding available for more complex cases.
