Church gets green light for community use as glamping site rejected

South Cambridgeshire councillors approve change of use for Fowlmere chapel while blocking tourism development in Arrington.

A former United Reformed Church in Fowlmere has been given permission to become a community facility, while plans for a glamping site with afternoon tea pods have been rejected.

South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Planning Committee made both decisions at its meeting on Wednesday.

The Fowlmere and Thriplow United Reformed Church will no longer be restricted to use as a place of worship, giving it greater flexibility to serve local residents.

The application was submitted by Fowlmere Parish Council.

However, councillors refused permission for a leisure and tourism development on land west of Church End in Arrington.

The plans, submitted by Highland Cow Cottage Limited, included four temporary buildings, a portable horse trailer bar, six afternoon tea pods and hardstanding.

The committee met at South Cambridgeshire Hall in Cambourne on 8 October at midday.

Both decisions are subject to formal decision notices being issued.

A recording of the meeting and full details of the applications are available on the council’s website.
