A man who attacked another with a wrench outside a Peterborough homeless charity has been handed a prison sentence.
Early on 1 August, Devon Cox, 27, confronted a 42-year-old man outside The Light Project, Gravel Walk, just after 6 am, demanding £500. When the victim refused, Cox pressed the wrench into his neck and threatened him, insisting he withdraw the sum from a cash machine.
Cox then punched and kicked the victim repeatedly, before seizing him and forcing him along Bridge Street into Broadway. He continued assaulting him, punching him several more times and throwing him to the ground. The victim escaped by boarding a nearby bus.
He was later treated in hospital for serious facial injuries.
At Peterborough Crown Court on Thursday 2 October, Cox, of Huntly Grove, Peterborough, pleaded guilty to ABH and was sentenced to one year and six months’ imprisonment.
Detective Constable Jake Boreham-Dennis, who led the investigation, said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim, who bravely refused Cox’s demands and managed to escape.
“I hope this sentence offers the victim some reassurance that justice has been served, and shows that violence of this nature will not be tolerated.”
